You can join FFSA by completing the membership application form, and paying the applicable membership fee. Your membership becomes active once your application has been processed and accepted.
Before you apply
FFSA membership is intended for pilots, students, instructors, schools, clubs and other participants in South African free flight activities. This includes:
- Paragliding, including Parakites and Speedflying
- Hang gliding
- Powered paragliding
- Related free flight training, support and administration
You should apply using accurate personal information. FFSA may use this information to manage your membership, communicate with you, support safety administration, and meet applicable organisational or regulatory requirements.
What you need to apply
Before starting the application, have the following ready:
- Your full name and contact details
- Your ID number or passport number
- Your flying discipline or area of interest
- Your current pilot licence
- Your school (for renewals)
- Any supporting information requested in the application form
- Payment details for the membership fee
If you are applying as a student, your school or instructor may need to provide or confirm some of your information.
How the application process works
- Complete the FFSA membership application form.
- Submit the required information.
- Pay the applicable membership fee.
- FFSA reviews and processes your application.
- You receive confirmation once your membership is active.
Submitting an application does not automatically make the membership active. The application must still be processed and accepted.
Membership period
FFSA membership runs for the period stated in the membership terms at the time you apply or renew. Your membership confirmation should show your membership status and relevant dates.
Insurance and membership benefits
Where insurance or other member benefits are linked to FFSA membership, those benefits only apply once membership is active and subject to the terms of the relevant policy or arrangement.
You should not assume that insurance or other benefits apply merely because you submitted an application. Wait for confirmation that your membership has been accepted and activated.
Flying under an approved organisation
South African aviation rules require certain non-type certified aviation activities to be conducted under the auspices of an approved Aviation Recreation Organisation. FFSA exists to provide a structured, credible and safety-conscious organisational home for free flight in South Africa.
Membership and operational requirements may differ depending on your discipline, licence status, training status and the applicable rules. If you are unsure what applies to you, contact FFSA before flying.
If you are a student pilot
If you are a student pilot, speak to your instructor or school before applying. They may guide you on the correct membership category, training pathway and required information.
Your student status does not remove the need for accurate membership records, safety oversight and clear communication between you, your instructor, your school and FFSA.
If you are an instructor, school or club
Instructors, schools and clubs should ensure that their own details are correct and that linked students or members are recorded accurately.
If you operate a school or club and need help with onboarding members, contact FFSA for guidance.
What happens after joining
Once your membership is active, you should:
- Keep your personal and contact information up to date
- Read the relevant FFSA rules, manuals and policies
- Understand the safety reporting process
- Confirm what insurance or member benefits apply to you
- Follow the requirements applicable to your discipline, rating and flying activities
Need help?
If you are not sure which membership category applies to you, or if your application details are unusual, contact FFSA before submitting duplicate applications.
Use the contact form and include enough information for the membership team to assist you.
